Our crisis response system, known as Aastha Tatkal Seva, is implemented by the Aastha Gats or self-help groups here at Aastha Parivaar. The system works in a range of situations, including instances of arrest, harassment or violence by goons, police, clients and pimps. The rapid response system also works for the health or medical needs of the community by networking and referring individuals to hospitals and health institutions.
- Providing a safe environment within the Aastha Gats, leading to vulnerability reduction and safer sex practices
- Provision of crisis support to sex workers within the shortest possible time (30 mins) from the crisis instigation time
- Providing support from sex workers to other sex workers in times of need, encouraging a greater sense of unity and strength
- Assisting the sex workers to take direct initiative and handle:
83,000 crises of various sizes have been addressed through this system to date- 96% of them within 30 minutes.
Due to Aastha Parivaar’s success as a HIV intervention and sex worker advocacy program, our community-based organizations and federation model have become a resource centre and learning site for NGOs around the world. Through FHI360’s Africa Bridge project, which aims to promote the sharing of resources and optimal practices between organizations in high-risk areas of Africa and India, we have received visitors from Ghana, Togo, Mozambique, South Africa, and Ethiopia. We also conduct our own trainings and workshops to share the strategies and successes of our model with initiatives that align with our vision.
